چکیده

Water-splitting dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (WS-DSPECs) use visible light to split water using molecular sensitizers and water oxidation catalysts codeposited onto mesoporous TiO2 electrodes. Despite a high quantum yield of charge injection and low requirement for the catalytic turnover rate, the quantum yield of water splitting in WS-DSPECs is typically low (<1%). Here we examine the charge separation and recombination processes in WS-DSPECs photoanodes functionalized with varying amounts of IrO2 nanoparticle catalyst. Charge extraction and transient open-circuit voltage decay measurements provide insight into the relationship between light intensity, conduction band electron density, open-circuit photovoltage, and recombination time scale. We correlate these results with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and present the first complete equivalent circuit model for a WS-DSPEC. The data show quantitatively that recombination of photoinjected electrons with oxidized sensitizer molecules and scavenging by the water oxidation catalyst limit the concentration of conduction band electrons and by extension the photocurrent of WS-DSPECs.

The influence of 1D, meso- and crystal structures on charge transport and recombination in solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells

We have prepared single crystalline SnO2 and ZnO nanowires and polycrystalline TiO2 nanotubes (1D networks) as well as nanoparticle-based films (3D networks) from the same materials to be used as photoanodes for solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells. In general, superior photovoltaic performance can be achieved from devices based on 3-dimensional networks, mostly due to their higher short circ...

Design and development of photoanodes for water-splitting dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells.

Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) use low-cost materials, feature tunable molecular sensitizers, and exhibit quantum efficiencies near unity. These advantageous features can be exploited in the context of solar water splitting by functionalizing DSSCs with catalysts for water oxidation and reduction. This article will cover the development of photoanodes for water splitting DSSCs from the pers...

Dynamics of charge transport and recombination in ZnO nanorod array dye-sensitized solar cells.

Intensity modulated photovoltage and photocurrent spectroscopies reveal that photoanodes based on nanorod arrays exhibit dramatically faster electron transport while retaining similar electron lifetimes (recombination times) compared to standard photoanodes assembled from colloidal nanoparticles.

Titanium dioxide-based nanofibers (TiO2 nanofiber) were prepared by an electrospinning technique. The electrospun composite fibers were synthesized at different concentrations of titanium isopropoxide (25.35, 50.69, 76.05 wt%) and calcinated at different temperatures (450 oC, 650 oC and 850 oC) for 2 h. The diameters of nanofibers decreased by increas...

Proton-Induced Trap States, Injection and Recombination Dynamics in Water-Splitting Dye-Sensitized Photoelectrochemical Cells.

Water-splitting dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (WS-DSPECs) utilize a sensitized metal oxide and a water oxidation catalyst in order to generate hydrogen and oxygen from water. Although the Faradaic efficiency of water splitting is close to unity, the recombination of photogenerated electrons with oxidized dye molecules causes the quantum efficiency of these devices to be low. It is t...
